Goodwin Tobacco's product "Old Judge" cigarettes and "Gypsy Queen" cigarettes were very popular in the 1880's and, as such, a number of advertising pieces were created to help continue to drive sales. In addition to the small baseball and actress cards that were inserted into packages, there was also a similarly sized coupon inserted into each package of cigarettes. Upon collecting a certain amount of coupons, they could be redeemed for a baseball cabinet card. To help drive this campaign, Goodwin issued an interesting Die Cut Metamorphic trade card. The top part of the piece is die cut shows a small boy requesting a package of Old Judge. The bottom half of the piece shows the boy getting switched because he brought something other than Old Judge. The campaign must have been met with mixed success because there are a number of different backs on the bottom 1/2 of the card advertising for redemption amounts of (25) to (35) coupons and different red/blue/purple overprints. For variation collectors, there are 7-8-9 different types of this trade card that can be obtained.
This Die Cut Old Judge Metamorphic Advertising Piece for Base Ball Cabinet Cards is the same one as pictured in Figure 5 on Page 63 of the Old Judge book. The piece is clean in VGEX to EX condition with the lightest crease on the very top tab.
