Auction #7 - February 2021

Having ended a mere 24-25 years before, the Civil War and its generals were a popular subject for the late 1880's tobacco sets with Duke leading the way. In addition to the small booklets, album and banner that Duke created, they made these beautiful large format generals cards that Burdick cataloged as N114 in the American Card Catalog. The set has all the best known generals of the Civil War from both the Union and Confederate sides led by U.S. Grant and Robert E Lee. Other notables in the set include Garfield who would later become president as well as Nathan Bedford Forrest--widely credited with starting the Ku Klux Klan.
This lot is for a single copy of the General James Garfield N114 from Duke Tobacco. The card is in about VG condition with rounded corners but nice surfaces and no creasing. The card would grade a nice VG condition. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States after his time as Civil War general. He was only president for about 6 months, being shot by an assassin 4 months into his term and dying about 2 months later.
