Schapira Brothers of New York, New York was a candy company, like many others that issued boxes of candy with pictures on the face of the boxes during the 1930's and 1940's. Schapira Brothers may be best known for their Babe Ruth candy boxes which are highly collectible. They also have a series of boxes that picture animals and 'googly eye' characters on the face of the box. In addition to those two, they issued candy boxes picturing the antics of Mutt & Jeff. Mutt & Jeff were born from the imagination of Bud Fisher and arrived in the funny pages in 1907. Described as a strip about "two mismatched tinhorns", Mutt & Jeff is widely regarded as the first daily comic strip.

This lot is for a single full candy box from Schapira Brothers of New York picturing the antics of Mutt & Jeff. The two faces of the box have different, numbered pictures on them. The box in this lot includes the Series 2, Picture D and Series 3, Picture A cards. The cards were commonly cut from the boxes but this box is fully intact. The box is in about Good condition with some stress to the flaps and a small piece missing from one of the side panels which is clearly shown. The 3A panel also has a spot in the upper right where it could have contained a price tag as well as some spotting/foxing on the face of the panel--most noticeably to the bottom half of the panel.
