The Phoenix Candy Company of Brooklyn, New York issued a number of candy boxes--largely in the late 1960's into the 1970's. Typically, the series were eight boxes in size with the occasional (6) or (12) box set. The boxes of candy--in most instances have a theme for the set and included candy and plastic novelties inside the box. Non-sport.com lists 21 different Phoenix candy box sets with a wide array of topics. The later series all seemed to revolve around television or movies. Each box within a given set has a character from the television series or movie and the boxes are almost always numbered within the series.
The "Gong Show" Phoenix Candy Box set of (8) boxes was issued in 1977 right at the height of the popularity of the television show--hosted by Chuck Barris--that ran June 1976 to September 1989 and featured all manner of 'talented' acts that were vying for the attention of the guest judges and were ultimately attempting to avoid the "GONG". The show's kitchy nature took hold and it's popularity is shown in the large catalog of 501 episodes.
This near set (7/8) boxes are largely in VG to EX condition, averaging about VGEX.
