The N566 Newsboy series pictures Actresses and numbers into the hundreds of cards. The Newsboy cabinets were likely point-of-sale giveaways for buying the Newsboy brand of tobacco. The cabinets are standard 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" cabinets and have an albumen photo adhered to a red-inked mount advertising Newsboy of New York at the bottom front of the cabinet. Cabinets are blank-backed and often numbered on either the cabinet front or within the photo field itself and, occasionally both places. Many actresses have multiple poses or can be found with different mounts and the set offers the variation collector some real opportunities.
This lot is for a single N566 Newsboy Tobacco cabinet featuring Lillian Russell. It is from the green mount numbered series and is #332. This card has the tough Bliss Long Cut advertising printed on the back of the cabinet. There are only a few of these cabinets that have been seen with the Bliss Long Cut advertising. Very tough variation to a very popular card from arguably the most well known actress and Broadway star of the late 19th century.
