Arguably, one of the most iconic monuments in Washington, DC is the Washington Monument. It's a 555.5125 foot tall obelisk-type monument to the first President of the United States, George Washington, and namesake of our country's capitol city. The monument is primarily constructed of marble and granite and it's interior has iron stairs that spiral up the walls to the top and an elevator in the center. Construction began in 1848 and didn't finally end until 1888 when the final finishing touches were completed. The Civil War and other skirmishes over control of the city and it's grounds caused the 40 year completion delay.
This lot includes two different cabinet cards that were likely issued in the period just after it was completed--sometime from 1888 to 1895 probably. The first is an oversized cabinet issued by Jarvis Publishing, measuring 6X9 inches. The second cabinet is a 4x6 inch cabinet. Both are albumen photos attached to cardboard mounts. The smaller cabinet is in VGEX to EX condition with a clean back while the larger cabinet is in F condition with paper pulls on the back of the cabinet.
