Inaugural January 2019 Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 1/27/2019
Having ended a mere 24-25 years before, the Civil War and its generals were a popular subject for the late 1880's tobacco sets with Duke leading the way. In addition to the small booklets, album and banner that Duke created, they made these beautiful large format generals cards that Burdick cataloged as N114 in the American Card Catalog. The set has all the best known generals of the Civil War from both the Union and Confederate sides led by U.S. Grant and Robert E Lee. Other notables in the set include Garfield who would later become president as well as Nathan Bedford Forrest--widely credited with starting the Ku Klux Klan.
The condition of this lot could best be described as poor with almost all the cards having some level of paper loss on the backs as well as minor creases here and there and some wear and dirt to 2-3 of the cards. The majority, however, do have decent fronts and would make good additions to a lower grade set or fill that spot until a better condition upgrade comes along.
The lot contains the following subjects: Buell, Earley, Foote, U.S. Grant, Hampton, Hardee(2), Hood, Johnston, Morgan, Scott, Sherman, Sigel, Smith
