Inaugural January 2019 Auction

Burdick had a section for paper dolls in the American Card Catalog in the "Z" classification. Within that classification, advertising dolls were all lumped into the Z12 classification. This set of (16) advertising dolls was issued by Stollwerck's Cocoa and Chocolate and picture nursery rhyme characters like Snow White, Jack and Jill, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and many others. They are colorful bi-fold dolls with an insert for the upper torso. The inserts could be mixed and matched as one would like and are more fragile because the arms are meant to be placed around the outside front of the doll's body. As such, when they were opened, they often wound up damaged in some form.
This complete set of 16 dolls is in about VGEX condition but appear to have a very light coating of glue on the backs where they may have been mounted at one time. The printing on the back and inside the dolls is in good overall shape, however. The lot contains the following subjects: Aladdin or the Wonderful Lamp, Alibaba, Cinderella, Jack, Jack the Giant-Killer, Jill, Little Bo-Peep, Little Boy Blue, Old Mother Hubbard, Puss in Boots, Queen of Hearts, Red Riding Hood, Rose Red, Sinbad the Sailor, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. All doll fronts and four sample backs have been scanned and are representative of all the dolls in the set.
