The N233 Kinney Tobacco Magic Changing Pictures card set is a (50) card set using popular gimmick of the day--the hold to light or HTL type of card. The cards are printed in layers and assembled where that, when held up to the light, the layer in the center of the card adds an image to the area of the card that is light colored. HTL postcards and cards were a popular device for advertising during the late 1880's to 1890's. Kinney issued this set of (50) normal sized tobacco cards which include images for Grover Cleveland as past president as well as a very tough card of John L Sullivan, the famous boxer of the day. The Sullivan card is the key to the set and will often bring as much for that single card that the other (49) cards will bring.
This lot includes (4) of the N233 subjects to include the titles "Our Past President" (Cleveland), "An Old Mans Darling" and a pair of the cards that begin "They've turned the Light". All the cards fall into the VG to VGEX range. The Cleveland card appears to have a few tobacco spots on the card front and back.
