The N83 Duke Tobacco Ocean and River Steamers is an ornate set of cards picturing boats that traveled up and down rivers of the U.S. moving both people and goods and helping build the early industrial economy of the U.S. By the 1880's, steamboats had enjoyed nearly a century of use around the world but were still an interesting enough subject to create a tobacco card set for. The size of the set, at 36 cards, is somewhat odd compared to the rest of the Duke sets, which mostly measure 25-50 cards.
This partial set of (19/36) cards from the N83 Duke Ocean and River Steamers cards include (13) with mostly clean backs in GVG to VGEX and (6) with heavy paper loss on the backs. The fronts of the cards retain the beautiful gold coloring and nice lithography.
