The Sen-Sen Gum Company issued two series of stamps picturing U.S. Battleships—likely during the end of WWI timeframe. The first series of stamps can be found with or without numbers on them. The stamps with numbers have not been seen to be above number twelve. The second series has only been found with numbers on them to date but its likely they could exist in both formats as the series one. The stamps are not catalogued in the 1960 ACC and are rather obscure. They were, however, subsequently classified as E289 in the third update to the ACC which was printed in late 1961.
Blank backed, the stamps are printed on a glossy-like paper similar to a stamp and perforated the same as stamps. Due to the difficulty of finding the stamps, the checklists below are incomplete. It is difficult to determine if the stamps were an insert into a gum product or possibly a premium for customer loyalty. They were likely issued in the late 1910’s to early 1920’s as the battleships pictured were involved in WWI and early 20th century Naval battles.
This pair of E289 Sen Sen Gum Battleship stamps are in VG to VGEX condition and mostly clean.
