Auction #9 - October 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/24/2021
This series contains 100 cards and features a gimmick in the form of a coated back which
could be scratched off to reveal a color graphic, along with the number of the card. These 24
cards still have the original coating intact, so they are not easily identified by number, but can be
identified by the combination of the state on the license place and the nature of the question on
the back, which is either a “Name that Car” query or a “Landscape” query. They are quite
collectible; PSA has a listing in its registry for the “coated” series. To my knowledge, no complete
set of these “coated” cards exists.
The question might arise, “why collect these cards in coated state?” One answer might
be that the condition of the cards is truly amazing. Since these cards have never been subjected
to the abuse of the “scratch-off” process, they look as if they just emerged from packs, over 70
years ago. The colors on the front are brilliant, the corners are sharp, and the black background is
dense and rich. This is a remarkable group of cards, which will transport you back to your
childhood, or perhaps beyond.
