The N158 Duke War Photographs set is a phenomenal real-photo card set detailing the combatants in the Spanish American War. The set is slightly oversized to other albumen photo sets of the day at 2-7/8" by 3-9/16". The set pictures thirteen individual military leaders as well as fifteen ships that were involved in the battle. Most notable subjects in the set include the recently discovered Teddy Roosevelt among the military heroes and the U.S.S. Maine, whose sinking precipitated the U.S. involvement in what later became known as the Spanish American War. The backs carry a printed advertisement for Honest Long Cut tobacco and note that the series was titled "War Photographs". The ship photos were used in other albumen photo sets of the day including the N50 Kinney and other manufacturers set and the N567 Newsboy Tobacco set.
This lot of (12) Duke Honest Long Cut War Photographs features (6) Ships and (6) military leaders. The cards are clean in VG to EX condition averaging about VGEX. The ship subjects include: Philadelphia USN, Maine USN, Charleston USN, Chicago, Indiana USN and Vesuvius USN. The military leaders include: Rear Admiral Dewey, Captain Sigsbee, Capt. Bob Evans , Gen Merritt, Maj. Gen. Shafter and Gen. Wheeler. Great lot of cards from this set which is rarely seen.
