Auction #8 - June 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2021
The J.U. O'Meara & Co. issued a group of trade cards known only as "Famous Men" and cataloged in the ACC as H566 advertising their Royal Glue product in what was likely the latter part of the 19th century. Although cataloged as "Famous Men", the set actually pictures a very few women including Queen Victoria, Lady Randolph Churchill, Mrs Grover Cleveland and MME. Kuki. The key to the set is a card of John L Sullivan which seems to be very difficult to find. The cards are printed on thin stock with backs advertising for Royal Glue. The fronts have a glossy coating on them that often causes them to slightly yellow. Many of the cards have been found with both black and red inset pictures of the subjects they portray. The cards measure 2-3/4" by 4". Eighty-five subjects have been seen with probably more that exist. It is not known if all subjects can be found with both the black and red inset portraits. It is also not known how the cards were distributed--as part of the package design, as an insert or as a point-of-sale give away.
This lot of (25) H566 Royal Glue Famous Men includes the following subjects: Wilson Barrett(3), Prince Bismarck, John Carlisle, Andrew Carnegie, Lady Randolph Churchill, Wm. W. Corcoran, Jefferson Davis(2), Chauncey M. Depew, Don. M Dickinson, Frederick III, Jay Gould, Gov. Robert S. Green(2), John J Ingalls, Mme Kuwi, Pope Leo XIII, Marquis of Salisbury, George Francis Train(3), Prince of Wales and Wm. C Whitney. All card fronts have been scanned and a sample back. As with all these cards, some are cut tight from side to side and may be missing some of the text on one side or the other. Overall, the group is in VGEX to EX condition or better.
