This Kinney New Year's Banner for 1890 is the companion piece to the N227 card set. The banner was not included in the American Card Catalog. This poster is larger than many of the other posters from Allen and Ginter and Duke which tend to be 5-6" narrower and, in some cases, quite a bit longer. The N227 card set is a 50 card set that picture Happy New Year's for 1890 in a standard tobacco card size format. They are blank backed cards and don't mention Kinney Tobacco on them anywhere or have any type of advertising, so they are often missed as being tobacco cards. The set is difficult to complete and often found in lower grade as well.
The text at the bottom of the banner reads "The New Years Cards represented on this show card, are packed in Kinney Bros Straight Cut and Sweet Caporal brands, and are without any advertisement, allowing name to be written on them, and used as calling cards. (Fifty different styles). The small vignettes on each of the (24) cards on the banner match cards from the (50) card set. They appear to be water color type paintings of scenes normally associated with the New Years time of year.
The visible area of poster is 19-1/2" wide x 29-1/2" tall and fully framed size is 23-1/2" wide x 33-1/2" tall. It has been framed with an expensive period type frame and is in beautiful condition. Without the ability to take the framing apart, I cannot determine if there are any of the metal frame hangers at the top and bottom of the poster but it should be noted that some posters exist without these anyway. I would note that the G92 Kinney Military Series banner measures 19-3/4" x 29" in the ACC, so the size of this banner is very near to the size of that banner. Other than a tear in the lower part of the middle of the bottom of the banner that measures about 1.5" long, this banner is in what I would consider to be EX condition.
This museum quality piece is quite possibly a one of a kind and would be ready to be hung on the walls of the very best collections or museums around. Due to the nature of the size, there will be additional shipping associated with this piece.
