Contentnea cigarettes were produced by the Erwin-Nadal Company in Wilson, North Carolina, a subsidiary of the American Tobacco Company from 1909-1910. The company issued a couple different sets of baseball cards--one smaller set with colored backgrounds (T209-1 with 16 cards) and a black and white larger set (T209-2 with 222 known cards). The cards pictured players from the North Carolina and Virginia minor leagues of the early 20th century. In addition to these two sets, Contentnea also printed a set picturing a single Indian picture but with different numbers in the corner. And, finally, they produced a very scarce silk series picturing college pennants against a white/cream background totalling (52) silks. As with the baseball series, the majority of the silks were of schools located in North Carolina but there were others included as well. The silks were issued with Contentnea advertising and with Plon Plon advertising--which are much scarcer than even the Contentnea.
This near set (51/52) is missing only Rutgers to be complete. There are also extra color variations for the following three schools: Clemson College, Converse College and Horner's School. Total silks in the lot is (54). The majority of the silks could be considered to be in about VG to VGEX with a few better and a few worse. These are very difficult to locate and this near set represents what is likely one of the largest holdings in the hobby.
