The R722 classification has been expanded to include (31) sets according to non-sport.com. The classification covers candy boxes with perforated cards meant to be punched out and collected into sets. Most are or were issued by the Novel or Leader Novelty companies of New York. Most sets contain (12) different subjects or boxes and generally they have some narrative and number printed on the back of the card or inside of the box.

R722-20 is the classification given to the Sad Sack set. Little is known about the quantity of cards in the set as only a pair are checklisted at non-sport.com and neither are pictured. The cards and boxes are prohibitively tough--tougher than many of the tougest sets in the R722 classification. Sad Sack debuted as a comic in June of 1942 in the midst of WWII. Between comic books and comic strips, Sad Sack ran in hundreds of newspapers and was on the comic book racks for decades.

This R722-20 Novel Comics Sad Sack box is in poor condition--missing some end flaps and with some creasing. The front panel and back panel with the card are in suprisingly good condition however. The card back is perforated as are all the Novel boxes and the card takes up the full panel back of the box. The card looks like a dollar bill and has Sad Sack in the center inside a stump running with the title "Camouflage" at the bottom. Regardless of the condition, this is one of the scarcest Novel Candy boxes and cards and to find it even partially intact is amazing. The Novel boxes and cards have become wildly popular as advanced collectors have begun to add them to already advanced collections.
