H566 Liquid Glue Famous Men Large Lot of (48) Plus U.S. Capital Card

The J.U. O'Meara & Co. issued a group of trade cards known only as "Famous Men" and cataloged in the ACC as H566 advertising their Royal Glue product in what was likely the latter part of the 19th century. Although cataloged as "Famous Men", the set actually pictures a very few women including Queen Victoria, Lady Randolph Churchill, Mrs Grover Cleveland and MME. Kuki. The key to the set is a card of John L Sullivan which seems to be very difficult to find. The cards are printed on thin stock with backs advertising for Royal Glue. The fronts have a glossy coating on them that often causes them to slightly yellow. Many of the cards have been found with both black and red inset pictures of the subjects they portray. The cards measure 2-3/4" by 4". Eighty-five subjects have been seen with probably more that exist. It is not known if all subjects can be found with both the black and red inset portraits. It is also not known how the cards were distributed--as part of the package design, as an insert or as a point-of-sale give away.

Subjects in this lot include: Bancroft, Beaver (2 different), Beecher, Boulanger (2 different), Carlisle, Carnegie, Childs (2), Lady Churchill, Grover Cleveland, Mrs. Cleveland, Corcoran, Cox, Jefferson Davis, Depew, Dickinson, Dillon, Dow, Ferry, Flood, Frederick III (2 different), Gladstone(2 different), Greely, Green, Grevy, Hancock, Harte, Mme. Kuki, Tuichi kuki, Lucas, Pope Leo XIII (2 different), Luce, Randall, Marquis of Salisbury, Sheridan, Sherman, Leland Stanford (2 different), Queen Victoria, Train, Count Vol Moltke, Whitney, Prince of Wales and a slightly larger card of the U.S. Capital building in a similar type format but horizontal. The cards are all in mostly VGEX to EX condition although some are trimmed slightly tighter than others and one card has a piece missing. The backs are all clean in the lot. This offers an opportunity to acquire a large batch of these--almost half the known subjects--in a single lot.
