The Thompson, Moore & Company issued a number of sets during the late 19th century--most notably their sets of playing cards issued in packages of tobacco. The N459 Hard-A-Port Rope Knots set is a tough set and rarely found. The cards picture sailors in various poses on the front of the card in various situations where tying ropes would be necessary for sailors. Each card outlines a different type of knot and what the knot looks like as well as a card title for the scene pictured. The backs of the cards advertise for Hard-A-Port brand and have a little poem or sea "shanty" at the top of the card pertinent to the front pictured graphic.
The complete set of (10) cards offered here run the gamut in condition. One third of the cards are in VG to VGEX condition with mostly clean backs and just general wear or a light crease. Another one third of the cards are in decent condition with some staining on the backs and the final one third of the cards have much stronger back damage than the rest of the cards in the set.
