Auction #5 - June 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2020
Along with the small N78 Duke Tobacco Civil War Generals booklets, the companion N114 set pictures (50) different Union and Confederate generals. The set can be found with (4) different layouts on the front for each of the (50) subjects, so it presents an interesting challenge for those who want to build master sets. The cards picture the artwork from both the front and back of the booklets on the front of the card with a nice biography for the general on the back. The cards are in the oversize format like the rest of the Duke Tobacco cards but interestingly do not have any advertising for Duke or any of their brands on the front or on the back of the card.
This lot of (25) cards from the N114 Duke Tobacco Histories of Generals set represents 1/2 of the set and includes the two key cards of U.S. Grant and R.E. Lee. The subjects in the lot include: Banks, Bragg, Earley, Forrest, Garfield, Gillmore, Grant, Halleck, Hampton, Hancock, Hardee, Jackson, Johnston, Lee, McClellan, Meade, Polk, Porter, Rosecrans, Scott, Sedgwick, Semmes, Sherman, Sigel and Smith.
The condition of the lot is in generally in VG to VGEX with a couple better and a few worse. 5-6 of the cards have some level of back damage or heavier back staining. Overall the group would make a great addition to a nice 19th century tobacco collection and offer an opportunity to immediately have half the set.
