S.F. Hess Tobacco was one of the multitude of tobacco companies that produced real albumen photo trading cards during the 1880's into 1890's. In addition to the actress cards, they also issued tough baseball cards of major leaguers, California league players and an odd set of "Newsboys". Most of the Hess series, including their full color chromolithographed sets, are more difficult to find than are the contemporary cards from A&G, Duke, Kinney and Kimball. Hess brands incliuded Creole cigarettes, Diadem, Railroad and others.
This lot is for a pair of N330 S.F. Hess actress cards of the same subject--Annie Howard--that have been graded by PSA as PSA5 or EX condition. The standing pose on the left has slightly better photo quality than the sitting pose on the right but both cards are in better shape than normal for the issue. The N330 series has consistently lower photo quality than some of the other actress series of the same time frame.
