The N512 classification seems to be somewhat of a 'catch-all' classification and inludes cards from a number of advertisers. In almost all cases, the cards of the N512 classification have glossier type fronts--glossier than the average 19th century cards. Cards can be found in a multitude of sizes with advertising for the tobacco company on the front, on the back or on both. Collecting N512 cards can be a daunting task as the occasional card comes up but it is rare to find a large group of them and difficult to put together a 'set' of the cards within a particular issuer due to the fact the cards aren't numbered and it appears that different issuers used different subjects within their sets. They do, however, provide for a fertile field for the type card collector due to the various combinations of advertisers, sizes and types of paper they can be found printed on.
This lot is for a single N512 card for Elite Cigarettes with the tagline "Superior Quality". This card is one from a larger format type of N512 series and measures about 3.5" x 5.0" in size. The card is printed on heavy stock with gold printed advertising on the front. The back is a yellow chip board type stock and exhibits glue staining where the card was likely removed from a vintage Victorian album. Great type card for the 19th century collector.
