The Duke N117 Industries of States series pictures women dressed in what appears to be Greek or Roman garb next to a shield for the respective state represented. Since the cards were likely issued in the late 1880's to early 1890's the scantily clad women likely caused a stir. Many of the women sport a bare breast and little is done to cover them. The backs of the cards advertise Dukes Brands of Gail & Ax or Honest Long cut and, other than the Illinois card, this lot is nearly a pure Gail & Ax lot. This is a fantastic start towards a complete set of these popular 19th century cards.
The condition of the lot is (15) cards in G to VG condition. The backs of all cards are in relatively decent condition with no apparent paper loss. This lot includes Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana(2), Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina(2), South Carolina and Vermont(2). Thirteen of the fifteen cards in the lot are the Honest Long Cut brand back with a pair (North Carolina and Michigan) bearing the Gail & Ax brand backs.
