The Boer war was fought from 1889-1902 between Great Britain and the two Boer Republics of South Africa. The British won due to a lopsided advantage. A number of cigarette sets picture the combatants and American Tobacco Company (ATC) issued a pair of sets--Series "A" and "B" of the Boer War cards overseas during the early part of the 20th century--just after the war. Seeking to capitalize on the images of war heroes, ATC issued two different versions of the "A" set--one with and one without numbers. The B set had only one version with numbers. Each series numbers (25) cards and are sepia waist-up photos on light beige background cards. The back have the classic ATC "green net" backs and note what series they are.
This lot contains a total of (19) cards--(12) series "A" including numbered versions of: 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 15, 19, 20 and 23. The (7) Series "B" cards in the lot are: 1, 2, 8, 10, 18, 20 and 22.
