The T229 Pet Cigarettes is a multi-sport card set primarily picturing boxers but also has aviators, cyclers and wrestlers. The set was issued sometime after the turn of the 20th century and is a very colorful series with biographical backs. The series was issued in California only and, as is the case with most of the other California-only issues, very difficult to locate.
This lot is for a single SGC-Graded T229 card of John L Sullivan--one of the most famous bare-knuckled boxers of the 19th century. The card pictures Sullivan in his later life beyond his career in a hat and suit with a gray mustache. The card has been graded as SGC20 or Fair 1.5 and has well-worn corners and a couple light purple stamps on the back. Sullivan is an extremely popular subject and this is a very tough set. This would make a great addition to a boxing collection or 20th century type card collection.
