The E183 Nominee or Party Gum set is a sepia set that are similar in look, feel and construction to the 19th century sepia toned albumen applied photo sets such as those of Old Judge and other actress sets. One of the pictured cards is that of Grover Cleveland, president from 1885-1889 and again from 1893-1897. Given the other subjects in the set, it is highly likely the set was to commemorate the 1888 Presidential Race—won by Benjamin Henry Harrison. The 1888 race was an interesting study as Grover Cleveland won the popular vote 48.6 to 47.8 percent but Harrison’s 233 electoral votes to Cleveland’s 168 cemented his victory. Harrison’s single term was sandwiched in between Grover Cleveland’s two terms outlined above. The subjects issued in the E183 set are similar to the E181 set and it is conceivable that the same subjects in the E181 Campaign gum set could be found in the E183 Nominee / Party gum set. The cards, like many of the albumen photo cards of the late 19th century are not found in the best of condition and are often miscut on one or more borders or have issues where the albumen photo was not glued to the backing in the best possible manner.
This lot is for a single E183 of Levi Morton in SGC20 condition. The card has an EX to EXMT appearance, and, but for a piece of paper adhered to the back, would have received a higher grade than the one it achieved. He had a storied political career as 22nd vice president of the United States from 1889 to 1893, United States ambassador to France, as a US representative from New York, and as the 31st governor of New York.
