The E273 set of political candidates was issued by the G&B Company of New York in the 1888-1889 timeframe. The G&B stands for Green & Blackwell—the two principles of the company. Both sets are extremely small sets in size and are very difficult to find. The cards picture candidates from the 1888 U.S. Presidential election. The series is so scarce that only the four subjects below have been checklisted. Like the Heisel’s E181 and E183, it is quite likely that more subjects exist. The cards are blank backed and are albumen photos adhered to thick cardboard in a format similar to the N172 Old Judge and other actress cards of the day. Like their E223 G&B baseball counterparts, the E273 G&B political candidate cards are extremely difficult to find and command some of the highest prices of any of the nonsport E cards.
This card is of A.C. Thurman from the 1888 U.S. Presidential campaign. Thurman was the VP candidate on the Democratic ticket with Grover Cleveland, who lost to Benjamin Harrison in the general election. The card is in Poor condition with trimming and is thin from skinning as well but is extremely difficult to find in any condition.
