The E91 American Caramel baseball card set, issued between 1908 and 1910, is a distinctive early 20th-century series divided into three subsets: E91A (1908), E91B (1909), and E91C (1910). Each subset comprises 33 cards, totaling 99, and features color lithographs of players from specific teams—Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia in the first two sets, and Boston, Pittsburgh, and Washington in the third. A notable aspect of the E91 series is the reuse of identical artwork across different players and years, leading to debates about the "generic" nature of the images. For instance, the same pose might represent different players in each subset, with only the name and team designation changing. Despite this, the sets include several Hall of Famers, such as Christy Mathewson, Eddie Plank, Honus Wagner, and Walter Johnson. Printed on thin card stock, these cards are susceptible to wear, making high-grade examples rare and sought after by collectors. The E91 series offers a unique glimpse into early baseball card production and the marketing strategies of the American Caramel Company. ?
