The 1954 Topps Scoop set is one of the more popular 1950's Topps sets. The 156 card checklist has cards for events that happened mostly in the 19th and 20th century and includes cards for many of the popular luminaries of the day including sports figures Babe Ruth, Bob Feller, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, John L Sullivan and others. There are cards involving events with US Presidents, Explorers and other historical events. The cards are constructed almost as a page out of a newspaper and are popular with set collectors, graded card collectors and topical collectors alike.
This 156-card series is a masterpiece of
1950s Topps card design. One of its most popular series ever, it features color artwork of
historical events on the front, and a distinctive (if apocryphal) banner newspaper headline
describing the event on the back. This set is presented in stunning EX-MT+ condition, including
72 PSA-graded cards which average an amazing 6.47. Among the PSA-graded “keys” are #1
(San Fran quake, PSA-6), #41 (Babe Ruth, PSA-6), #64 (Marciano KOs Walcott, PSA-7), #71
(John L Sullivan defeated, PSA-6), #75 Dillinger shot, PSA-7), #102 (Stanley Finds Linvingstone,
PSA-7), #110 (Notre Dames’s 4 Horsemen), #128 (Jesse Owens, PSA-7), #129 (Ben Hogan
PSA-7). You will struggle to find a set for sale that will match this one, let alone top it. All raw
cards are stored in Cardsaver 1 holders, and all cards are mounted on 4-pocket plastic pages in
two looseleaf binders for convenient viewing. Delightful! Also included are eight cards with the
original “scratch-off” feature intact.
This complete set is pictured in its entirety in the attached, downloadable PDF file. All cards are scanned on the front only. Ruth and Hogan alone, in PSA7 NM grades sell for $700+ and $300+ respectively. This set has tremendous break-up value in the thousands of dollars.
