The E40 Philadelphia Caramel Airships set is a (15) card set picturing early airships likely from the period of 1908-1910. The cards picture subjects bound to have excited small children who pulled them from caramel packs of the day. Six of the 15 cards picture dirigibles with the other nine picturing early airplanes by the likes of the Wright Brothers, Curtiss, Farman, Bleriot and others. Many of the airplane subjects can be found on other card sets of the day from candy, tobacco and other manufacturers.
This set is completely graded by PSA with an overall grade of PSA4.5. There are a total of 66 cards from this series graded by PSA. Many of these cards are among the highest at their grade level. In particular Republique (PSA6 EXMT) and Langler (PSA5 EX) are the highest graded of their title with none higher. Most other titles have but a single card higher.
The condition breakdown is as follows: PSA3 VG (2 cards including Bleriot and Gleason-Robinson), PSA4 VGEX (1 card - Farman), PSA4.5 VGEX+ (3 cards including Latham, Lefebvre and Wright Biplane), PSA5 EX (7 cards including Baldwin, Bates, Chinese, Curtiss, Knabenschue, Langler and Santo Dumont), PSA6 EXMT (2 cards including Republique and Zeppelin). Beautiful high-grade, completely graded set from the Caramel era of the early part of the 20th century. The assigned grade level of 4.7 would put this set at #2 in the PSA registry behind the #1 set at 5.90 by a little over a point.
