The Heinz Company issued three different sets of cards picturing airplanes and aviators in 1935. Aviation had become more mainstream and the explosion of different aircraft and famous aviators was a popular subject on cards to try to help sell products. A vast number of aviation-themed sets from the 1930’s and 1940’s are collected today and perhaps none quite as widely as the Heinz issues. The F277-1 first series pictures 25 different airships from the 1930’s. Picturing planes from all the large manufacturers like Douglas, Vaught, Boeing, Sikorsky and more, the set pictures full color drawings on the front with A small bio on the back of the card at the top and details about the set and a redemption offer for the albums at the bottom. In addition to being numbered, the cards have a code in the lower right of the card is believed to be a Julian date and year that the card was produced. For instance, code 14636 would be believed to be the 146th day of the year in 1936. If you enjoy variation collecting, you will find a number of these codes in these sets.
This lot of (7) F277-4 Heinz Rice Flakes cards have all been graded by SGC and include the following subjects: #3 Rickenbacker (SGC80), #5 Neumann (SGC86), #7 Depew (SGC88), #13 Doolittle (SGC60), #17 Merrill (SGC84), #18 Sergievsky (SGC80) and #25 Balchen (SGC84). Great lot for the set builder of these very popular cards.
