The N172 Old Judge Baseball set is one of the seminal sets of baseball cards along with the T206 set, 1952 Topps and a few more. The N172 Old Judge set was issued by Goodwin & Company in packs of their Old Judge cigarettes from 1887 to 1890. During this time, many, many variations and iterations of cards were issued by Old Judge resulting in a set of approximately 520-525 subjects with many thousands of possible permutations and combinations of poses, team changes, variations in fonts used on the front of the card to team designations for Player's League. Subsets within the set include the Brooklyn Outdoors cards, the Brown's Champions, the Spotted Ties and the cards are collected in a variety of ways including by individual player, by team, by the previously mentioned subsets and by player by pose. The cards have a wide range of photo clarity due to the development process of the albumen photos which are affixed to the cardboard and then cut into the 1-7/16" x 2-1/2" final size for the cards. The cutting process in the 1880's wasn't as well crafted as today so variances in size do exist.
This single N172 Old Judge Baseball card features George Schoch of Washington. The card has been tightly trimmed and is graded as Authentic by GAI.
