Inaugural January 2019 Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 1/27/2019
In an era when fake news wasn't as prevalent, Allen & Ginter issued the American Editors set in two formats--small and large. The small were cataloged as the first Allen & Ginter set or N1 and the oversized format were cataloged as N35. Both series are great indicators of the power of the press in the late 1880's/early 1890's, picturing real life publishers or editors of many of the most prominent papers of the day. With subjects like Pulitzer, A.H. Belo, George Childs, Charles Dana and Whitelaw Reid and representing papers from New York, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia and other important cities of the U.S., the set is a popular set to collect. The card contained in this lot is of James Gordon Bennett, founder, editor and publisher of the New York Herald. Bennett was born in 1795 and passed away in 1872, so his death preceeded this card by some 16-20 years. It's a testament to his legacy that he was added to the set.
This card has been graded by PSA as EX5 condition and would be a great addition to anyone's Allen & Ginter collection. There are 4 in the grade with none higher.
