In addition to cards, tobacco companies issued other premiums to be inserted into packs of tobacco during the 1880s through1910's. The later years saw silks, leathers, blankets, pinbacks and other premiums added to packs in an effort to entice buyers to buy their products. Sweet Caporal Cigarettes, in 1911 added a set of baseball pinbacks to their incentives to stimulate purchases. The pinbacks were headshots of 152 different players and were brown or sepia-toned images that, in most cases, matched the T205 images from the same year--generally in lesser detail. The pins had some interesting variations in both player teams and in the size of the font used on the fronts of a subset of the pins. The variations are known as Large Letter pins or (LL) and generally use larger fonts with a little more spacing between the letters. Team variations and (LL) variations bring the total number of possible pins in the set up to 205. Complete sets are rarely seen.
This single P2 Sweet Caporal Pinbacks is of the subject George Mullin W/Cap (Large Letters) that has been graded PSA7 NM.
