Inaugural January 2019 Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 1/27/2019
Sweet Caporal issued a number of card sets in the 1880's through 1910's. They also inserted other products into their packs of cigarettes including these pinbacks. The P1 Actress Set has a known checklist of 256 different pinbacks. The pins are 7/8" in size with a sepia headshot of the actress and a name in a bar at the bottom front of the pinback. As with many of the sepia toned cards, these pins also suffer from light photos in some cases. The pins, also due to age, can suffer from a number of other maladies including foxing and crazing. Foxing is when the pinbacks have brown spots on them and crazing is when the pinbacks suffer from cracks to the celluloid surface.
Of the 187 pins in this lot, 153 have open backs with back papers, 16 are missing back papers and 18 are closed back pins of a couple different styles. The back papers in this lot are of 2-3 different styles as well. This lot represents a great start to a complete set of these pins and nearly 3/4 of a complete set. There is good variety of a number of different variations within this set. All pins are in coin flips and in 20 count plastic pages with sufficient space to add to the collection. A number of the flips have identification on them as pictured or written onto the flip itself. Stars in the lot include Lillian Russell, Della Fox, Mary Anderson and other famous actresses of the day, many of which can also be found in many of the more popular card sets from the 1880's through 1910's.
The condition breakdown on this lot is as follows: 5% suffer from pretty severe foxing or crazing, 25% have very small foxing issues, 35% are in clean condition approaching a VG to VGEX type condition and the remainder are in cleaner EX type condition (as those pictured). The backs of the pins have Sweet Caporal back papers in them and the pinbacks can be either open or they can be closed pins with no back papers.
