The Overland Candy company of Chicago, Illinois issued a number of 1930's novelties to house their candies in and spur sales. These included die cut boxes and wrappers picturing baseball players, among others. Overland was one of a number of Candy, Gum and Chocolate companies in the Chicago area vying for the pennies and nickels of American children to stay in business. The box in this lot is from what is noted as a series of (18) different models of cars made for the Overland Candy Company by the Walter M Carqueville Co--also of Chiago to house their candies and likely a novelty item or two. Many of these boxes of candy housed gumballs or other candies and small tokens not unlike a Monopoly game token or something very similar.
This lot contains a single subject from the (18) car set being a Chevrolet which is apparently number 14 in the series. The car is kind of a teal base color with orange highlights and, when folded properly, takes on the shape of a small car about 4 inches long and 1.5 inches high. The piece is in overall VGEX to EX condition save for a small crease through the lower part of the card which is understandable given that it would have been folded to create the area to hold the contents. Great opportunity to add to a candy box or "R" card collection from what is likely the 1930's. This is the first of these we have seen and a long-time car card and novelty collector remarked that this is the only one that he's seen.
