The H606 J & P Coats Uniforms of the U.S. Army is arguably one of the nicest trade card sets of the 19th century. J & P Coats thread was one of the most proliferant advertisers of the period and created set after set of trade cards. Most of the sets are 6-8-12 cards in length,so this set is the largest set that they apparently issued. Another difference is that most companies just bought stock cards for advertising which were likely less expensive than hiring someone to do unique, new artwork for an advertising set. This set has not been used anywhere else that we can find and the artwork is far above par for the average 19th century trade card set. Each card shows a scene of life from the myraid wars that created the United States from the revolutionary war through the 1880's and the uniforms associated with those wars and moments. Each card measures 4-1/8" wide by 4-3/4" high.
This lot of (7) H606 J P Coats Uniforms of the Army are in higher grade than are normally found in the VGEX to EX range. The lithography on the front of the cards on this set is so striking and so well done. Would make a great lot for the set builder or to upgrade an already-complete set.
