Auction #5 - June 2020

Allen & Ginter's efforts at advertising were really second to none. They created a huge amount of trade cards and began issuing cabinet cards and insert cards into the 1880's. Their products of Richmond Straight Cut and Gem and Sunny South and other cigarettes were heavily advertised with their "Planter" logo and other efforts.
The cabinet in this lot is one of the more interesting cabinets Allen & Ginter issued during what is likely the late 1880's to 1890's. The cabinet is a composite photo, picturing 5 actresses and advertising for Richmond Straight Cut Cigarettes. The cabinet is sized about 4-1/2" by 7" and just slightly longer than the normal cabinet cards of that era. The bottom of the cabinet has gold printing with Allen & Ginter - Richmond Straight Cut (No.1) Cigarettes - Are the Best. The actresses on the cabinet are identified from top left to bottom right as: Lecuyer Palais Royal, Charvet Paris, Bonnet Palais Royal, Laus Eden and Germaine Gaietee. The piece has been graded by SGC as SGC60 EX condition and is a really nice piece of tobacco advertising from the height of the period.
