Auction #18 - October 2024
Gum, Inc of Philadelphia, PA continued their dominance of the nonsport world in 1941 when they issued the R157 Uncle Sam set. The 96 card set pictured soldiers, sailors, marines airmen and civilians as stated on the back of the card. The cards showed members of the different branches of service in different daily activities--both in the USA in preparation for war and working through drills, and in the field in actual combat.
The R158 Gum Inc Uncle Sam : Home Defense set is the followup set to the R157 Gum Inc Uncle Sam set. The set picks up with card #97 and there are (48) total cards in the set. The second group of (24) cards--numbering #121-#144 are significantly tougher than the lower numbered cards. The cards feature similar artwork to the first 96 cards of Uncle Sam.
This R157/R157 near complete set of (125/144) cards are generally in VG to EXMT condition, averaging about VGEX/EX. The five high series, very tough cards are the following subjects: #128 Fire Watcher (VG to VGEX), #129 Bomb Squad (Fair), #132 Light Rescue Party (Good), #138 Road Repair Crew (Fair) and #142 (VG). The high number cards are prohibitively difficult to find.
