The alubmen photo actress cards of the 1880's to 1890's are a daunting group of cards to try to get a grasp on. Kinney, Kimball, Allen & Ginter and Duke all issued numerous albumen photo cards in various sizes picturing actresses and other celebrities. In many cases, within these manufacturers, there are a multitude of different types and formats for these cards. Whether numbered or not, whether advertising within the field of the photo or not, whether the actress is named or not are just a few of the different parameters when trying to checklist and assemble these sets. Burdick assigned N45 to a group of cards that were from Allen & Ginter and advertised such brands as Virginia Brights, Our Little Beauties, Opera Puffas and Dixie Cigarettes. Cards within the different groups of N45 can often be found with multiple types of the mentioned brands as advertising on the front of the card at the bottom or within the field of the card itself. The individual brands offer a great deal of interest when collecting the issues.
This lot of (3) N45 Allen & Ginter Virginia Brights cards have all been graded PSA7 or Near Mint. The Molly Mack card is from the N45-1 subseries of Virginia Brights cards--the most common with what I call the 'wave' advertising on the front at the bottom. The Louise Paullin card is from the N45-2 subseries of Virginia Brights cards that has the Virginia Brights tagline within the field of the photo in white print against a black backdrop. The final card pictures four different actresses in a quadrant format with the 'wave' advertising at the bottom. These three cards are in well above average condition for the series and offer a great opportunity for an advanced Allen & Ginter / Virginia Brights collector or a typecard collector as well.
