The N146 Set from Duke's Tobacco are slightly larger than the N145 series but smaller than the larger, oversized Duke cards of the same timeframe. The series can be found with Duke's Mixture on the front at the bottom or with Duke of Durham. The series contains a number of politicians, actors and actresses and other celebrities of the day.
This lot includes a group of (6) N146 Duke's cards. (3) of the cards are Duke of Durham advertising and (3) are Duke's Mixture advertising. The Duke of Durham subjects include three M.C.'s (or Members of Congress) including Tim Campbell (NY), Turner(GA) and Walker(MO). All three Duke of Durham Cards are in VGEX to EX condition and very clean front and back. The (3) Duke's Mixture cards include Rev. De Witt Talmage--a well known preacher of the 1880's, Belva Lockwood--a well-known Temperance movement and Suffragette and Josh Billings--the pen name of humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw. Talmage and Lockwood are in VGEX to EX condition with Billings in about VG with some chipping. Interestingly, the set is credited with being an 1888 set, but Josh Billings passed in 1885.
