The 1950 Topps License Plates set is a 100 card set of license plates issued by Topps coming on the heels of their successful 1949 small license plate set that was inserted into the small tabbed gum. The set has 75 different backs. Cards 26-50 have two different plates assigned to them. Cards 1-25 and 51-75 have questions about the states on the backs.
This is a stunning, high-grade specimen of this difficult-to-complete series. This can be a confusing series, even for veteran collectors. There are 50 unique card fronts, comprising each of the then-48 states, plus Quebec and D.C. Each card front is paired with two quiz backs, yielding a total of 100 cards. To further complicate matters, there are only seventy-five different numbered card backs, so that the highest numbers appearing on the back of any card is #75. Of these seventy-five backs, fifty bear “Landmark questions” (#1-#25 and #51-#75) and the remaining twenty-five bear “Name That Car” questions (#26-#50, each appearing twice in the series). The toughest cards to acquire, by far are the “Name That Car” backs. These cards were originally issued with scratch-off coatings on their backs, but that has been almost completely removed from all the cards in this set. The back art is full- color and lovely. The questions are fun to answer, and will test your knowledge of vintage cars and of the American landscape. Overall condition is amazing, with most cards having sharp corners and edges. Certainly one of the best such sets in the hobby. Magnificent! All cards stored in Cardsaver 1 plastic holders, displayed in plastic pages inside a sturdy looseleaf binder. Set also includes a genuine original 1953 Pennsylvania license plates, which matches the appearance of the corresponding card in the set.
