The R437 Novel Candy Joe Palooka set is one of many boxed candy sets of the 1940's/1950's that featured cards as part of the package design. The boxes typically held a few gumballs and a couple trinkets of some sort with a card on the back of the box that was meant to be removed either by cutting or tearing at the perforations. The R437 set shows a manufacturer of Comics Novelty Candy Corporation of New York, NY. The set features the comic character Joe Palooka on the front panel of the box with a real boxer on the back of the box along with their birth, weight, manager and other biographical information along with famous fight information. Boxers in the set include Jack Johnson, James. J. Corbett and John L Sullivan among others. There are (12) boxes in the set.
