The August Beck Tobacco Company of Chicago, Illinois issued a small amount of sets in the late 19th century, mostly under the Yum Yum advertising brand. In addition to the very difficult N403 Yum Yum baseball player cards, Beck issued 4 other sets of actresses, dancers and a mixed set of other subjects. The N398 set pictures Sports, Military, Ships and Native Americans. Most all the Beck sets are very difficult types and even more difficult to complete sets. The N398 cards are printed on a thin paper stock.
This lot includes a pair of N398 cards picturing ships to include "Brig" and "Mississippi River Steamboat". In addition to the pair of N398's there is a Tobacco coupon #6 for a free watch and another card that is entitled "A-La-Mode" which seems to be something like a horoscope-type card. All are in VGEX to EX condition with the exception of the Mississippi River Steamboat card which has a crimped spot around the lower right section where the Beck's Hunting Tobacco advertisement is located.
