Trade cards began in the later middle part of the 19th century and flourished into the later part of the 19th century. Throughout that progression, companies continually looked for other, better ways to advertise. As plain old stock trade cards became less popular, companies looked for ways to get their products advertised and no other category worked harder than the tobacco industry. Whether it was inserting cards into products, creating advertising for windows, using die cut cards or other methods, they found innovative ways to showcase their products. One such was was the use of mechanical trade cards. Called mechanical because you have to move one or more flaps to show different scenes, these cards were created in many different combinations for a variety of companies. The four cards in this lot all advertise for tobacco products and all four are cataloged in the American Card Catalog under the "HM" or Metamorphic and Mechanical Trade card category.
The cards and conditions in this lot include HM1 Duke - The Discomfited Drummers - Duke of Durham (P/F), HM9 - Dime - Durham - This Stupid Boy (P), HM14 Allen's Jewel - A Sure Defence (GVG) and HM52 Railroad Mills Snuff - "Not up to Snuff" (GVG).
