The 1954 Topps World on Wheels proved to be a huge hit. The set pictured a couple hundred different cars and other conveyences on wheels like motorcycles, buses and others. The set, along with the 1952 Topps Wings cards and the Topps Rails and Sails cards are some of the most popular 1950's cards that Topps debuted.
As a set, World on Wheels is fairly common, at least the basic run of the first 160 cards. However, this set includes the much rarer cards #161-170, plus the very difficult red-backed cards #171-180. The attractiveness of this set is further enhanced by its superior condition: EX-MT+ overall. I do not believe I am stretching the truth by claiming this is one of the nicest such sets in the hobby.
Although this set consists primarily of raw cards, it does include the following twenty-two PSA-graded cards: #6 (NM-MT 8, pop 15, 3 higher), #10 (NM-MT 8, pop 17, 8 higher), #14 (NM-MT 8, pop 14, 7 higher), #20 (NM 7, pop 6), #30 (NM 7, pop 12), #34 (NM 7, pop 9), #36 (NM 7, pop pop 9), #63 (NM 7, pop 13), #91 (MINT 9, pop 5, none higher), #94 (EX 5), #98 (NM-MT 8, pop 15, 3 higher), #103 (nm 7, pop 13), #108 (NM-MT 8, pop 18, 7 higher), #105 (MINT 9, pop 12, 3 higher), #109 (MINT 9, pop 7, none higher), #110 (MINT 9, pop 8, 1 higher), #111 (NM-MT 8, pop 19, 13 higher), #115 (NM 7, pop 8), #117 (MINT 9, pop 4, 1 higher), #125 (NM 7, pop 5), #131 (NM-MT 8, pop 22, 5 higher), #134 (NM 7, pop 12), #177 (EX-MT 6.5).
There are 56 of the cards (of the 160 low numbers) which would require upgrading for the basic set to achieve a strict EX-MT minimum across the board. However, these cards are offset by a large number of outstanding cards grading NM and NM-MT. The ultra-high numbers #171-180 average about EX+, which is an outstanding grade for these difficult cards.
All the raw cards are stored in Cardsaver 1 protective holders, and the entire set is housed in 4-pocket plastic pages inside two sturdy loose-leaf binders. A lovely set! This set has a fair reserve commensurate with the quality cards it contains.
